Coraline waited patiently, counting out loud and listening carefully for the sound. A quiet splashing noise followed by a rather loud splashing noise could be heard coming from far below. Smiling grimly with satisfaction, she took a step back and fetched the wood. Pushing the boards across the well, she weighted then nailed them down into place. She didn’t want anything or anyone getting back out of the well.
“Coraline! Come on inside, it’s going to rain!” Her mother called out.
“Coming mother,” Coraline said, packing away the tea set and toys before running past the tennis court and up the lawn. Taking the front steps two at a time, she ran through the door and straight into someone just as the rain fell and lightning flashed. Staring up at the panicked stranger Coraline looked around the room curiously.
The door she had come through was gone, replaced by stone walls. The hallway she should have been standing in now contained beakers and flasks, various coloured liquids, intriguing dribbly things and a rather tall, strange man. He looked exactly like the mad scientist sort except without the hysterical laughing. He smiled nervously at her running a hand over a zip that ran along the top of his head.
“Hello small child, are you lost?”
“I might be. I didn’t think we had a laboratory in our house but I’ve found stranger things.” Coraline said, glancing around the room. “Are you my other father?”
“Am I your…” He said pausing thoughtfully, his brows furrowed at the question before he turned properly and grinned at her. “Hi! The name’s Glitch on account of sometimes my synapses don’t fire right. Who are you?”
“Hello Glitch, I’m Coraline.” Coraline said, putting her hand into her pocket. She’d given the stone back to Miss Spink and Miss Forcible; she was on her own here. Coraline sighed and took a step into the room properly. “Is this your lab?”
“Yes Coraline, yes it is. Well, I think it is. Maybe, I’m not quite sure.” He began before looking at her seriously. “Listen doll, you’re not supposed to be here. This is for Grown-Ups; it’s dangerous for little girls, even little magically appearing girls.”
“Glitch?” Another man asked hovering at the door, looking between herself and Glitch.
“Cain!” Glitch said enthusiastically, bounding over to the man.
“Who’s the kid?”
“Apparently she thinks I’m her father,” Glitch explained, whispering quietly
Cain stared past Glitch’s shoulder at the small girl who was examining a tapestry on the wall with a strange curiosity.
“Have you kidnapped me? I think it’s only right I should know,” Coraline asked.
“No, yes, well…kind of. We didn’t mean to, you see there was this evil witch.”
Coraline listen patiently to the explanation and then sighed. He had gotten her name right and he didn’t like the other father even if he did have a zip where there shouldn’t be. Coraline nodded her head decisively and pounded her fist into her hand. “Alright then, let’s go defeat the evil witch.” Coraline said grinning happily.
Cain could see this little snip of a slipper was going to be a whole lot of trouble.

A CORALINE PART:

“Other father,” Coraline corrected absentmindedly.
