Oh my god, I was just....first scene with him MAGIC TRICK \o/, he started with the TONGUE and I was dead. ABSOLUTELY DEAD.

And then [spoilers!][/spoilers!]

I'm going again. Soon. Very, very soon. OKAY! NOW YOU CAN TELL ME! And they had a Scaaarecroooow cameo~! ♥

THAT MAGIC TRICK. D: I swear, I'm going to run away screaming if someone ever says they're going to show me a magic trick. *shudders*

I know I said that I wasn't spoiled for anything besides Crane's cameo, but I was spoiled for the hospital scene - there was a promo shot released several months ago that I snagged. Still, plotwise? I was totally unprepared!

Two words on the tongue thing: TARDIVE DYSKINESIA. A condition that develops as a response to being treated with Thorazine (an antipsychotic) for an extended period of time. Presents with unconscious physical tics, one of the most well-known being licking the lips. [/psychology lecture] It makes sense that at Arkham he would have been diagnosed with psychosis (even though he's clearly not psychotic; no break with reality, he was TOTALLY AWARE OF EVERYTHING - but Thorazine was an experimental treatment for Antisocial Personality Disorder for a while.) Personally I just think he's a sociopath. One that's WAY on that end of the spectrum.

DR. CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE. I love that he showed up! And he's not dead! HE CAN COME BACK IN THE THIRD MOVIE. :D

The magic trick made me feel like a bad person for how hard I ended up laughing. BECAUSE IT DID WHAT HE SAID IT WOULD! And oh, the shock factor was lovely, absolutely lovely.

See, the only problem I can see with the Tardive Dyskinesia (oh, the things you teach me ♥) is the fact they say he has no records, and therefore wasn't at Arkham to be treated. I don't know how common Thorazine is or how easy it is to find (or who would even give it to him...) but now I'm all fascinated and so forth.

AND, since you know all this swanky psychology stuff, how likely do you think it is that the smiley-scars were self-inflicted? I like the idea that something set him off really really badly one day and he sliced himself up since there was nobody else around to hurt, but if it's highly unlikely on the psychological side of things, I get to theorize more! Because it's FUN. Which did you like better btw, the Daddy story or the wife story?

I WANTED MORE CRANE. Although his line was 100% win. Oh, Scarecrow. Two-Face was a massive dissapointment to me when they translated him into semi-realistic-Batman (ASIDE FROM HOW THEY GOT THE FACE PERFECT ♥) but Crane's cameo? Made up for the whooole thing. And killing Rachel. I liked that their priorities were finally set straight.

THAT MOMENT. Oh. Every time I just end up looking so horrified. [livejournal.com profile] ginnyjake was sitting next to me and her reaction was almost painful to hear. But that was some of the best use of surprise I've ever seen, and so completely in character.

(Mmm, I'm a damned good teacher, too, just ask my coworkers. :P) Thorazine was the first breakthrough typical antipsychotic ("typical antipsychotic" meaning the older drugs); though it would be more likely that someone with psychosis would be treated with the newer risperidone (very low chance of developing TD), thorazine is the most commonly known neuroleptic and would be most likely to be used in popular media. And risperidone is the only neuroleptic with such a low chance of developing TD; there are plenty of others out there with high risk factors.

Note: I specialized in studying risperidone treatments in psychopharmacology last year, not thorazine, so bear with me as I brush up on the basics. *g*

Ah, but he could have been using a false name - Arkham isn't known for looking too deeply into things if they can help it. He could have also erased all of his records later. Thorazine's not terribly common now, but it would be a decent drug to use to control someone, as the short-term withdrawal symptoms are awful, and would be most likely to be used in the Narrows. Not too hard to get - it's still effective, it just has more side effects than the newer drugs. It works well to combat mania (recklessness, elevated energy levels, euphoria), which...actually, is most likely what they would have medicated him for. Maybe someone thought they were doing the right thing by treating him, either an incompetent psychiatrist or someone who knew exactly what they were doing and were trying to control him in some way.

Though disregard for the safety of self and others is a typical symptom of Antisocial PD, I don't think he did it intentionally. I read a rumor somewhere that a scene was being shot (flashback-like) for TDK in which a wire snapped while the Joker was working a job, and cut his face, just happening to be in the shape of a smile. It could go either way, but I didn't really get the masochist vibe from him. He IS a classic death-darer though; which goes hand-in-hand with APD. So, *shrug* It's a bendable idea. I loved the Daddy story; the wife story I just couldn't buy.

Is it bad that I maybe, kind of, might have taken that psychopharmacology class because of Dr. Crane? *hides*

If you saw Wanted, that had some good surprise moments, but nothing NEARLY as good as The Joker's.

You are a FANTASTIC teacher, and have the most intriguing sorts of knowledge in that lovely head of yours. ♥

See, my only problem with the idea of using a false name at Arkham is...well okay I have two, the first being Movie Logic, where what they say is TEH ULTIMATE AUTHORITEE, and then that whole "no aliases, no prints on file" thing (which gets me all excited because it introduces the idea of The Joker making all his plans up completely on the fly and that he suddenly just popped up and decided to go massacre people). But then again, who knows. I find the idea of some black market psychiatrist locking The Joker up and trying some experimental thorazine treatments on him pretty amusing, but then again I'm a very strange person and I'm now utterly convinced it's tardive dyskinesia because it makes SO MUCH SENSE.

I really, really home the wire scene is just a rumor, because that would be such a BORING explanation for such an interesting feature. Twoface gets his fiancee blown up along with half his face, but The Joker gets a wire? No thank you. :/ And I too prefer the Daddy story. Much more interesting and well-delivered, plus he made amusing faces during it.

And considering that thanks to Dr. Crane I get creeped out every time someone says "Would you like to see my _insert everyday object_?" out of the blue, I think you're peachy keen.
From: [identity profile] phiremangston.livejournal.com
I've been thinking about that, if just for the PRETTEH. Yum. That cinematography is GORGEOUS DARLING.

OH BUT I AM, YOU'VE NO IDEA. *evil grin* I need to start reading random blog feeds again, it's so much fun.

But do fans EVER follow the laws of Teh Ultimate Authoritee? Noeeeeeeeees. I love your idea. It makes so much sense for the Joker! I totally think at least SOMEONE tried to treat him and make him a normal person, and how ironic would it be if it were Dr. Crane? Note: I LOVE the fact that Crane is now a black market psychiatrist! Though I kind of want him to be in charge of Arkham again somehow in the next film... YAY FOR ME CONVINCING YOU. I love psychology. This is the best fandom for psych majors, I swear. ♥

I think it was just a rumor. I stopped reading the SHH! (http://www.superherohype.com) boards ages ago just in case some rumors turned out to be correct, but from the sounds of it that was a foiler. So no worries. He totally killed his father after.

Hahaha. No worries, I'm going to run away screaming the next time someone offers to show me a magic trick.

(And I'm thinking about writing meta about the psyches of all the Nolanverse goodies and baddies. And how the Joker isn't actually crazy, because I'm weird like that. Yes?)

Didja see it, though? Did you did you did yooouuuu? I'd write fic but I would feel insecure about it, since it would involve torture and gore and not in the fun AU way.

YOU COULD TOTALLY WRITE FIC YOU SILLY GIRL, YOUR FICS ARE ALWAYS GREAT. YOU COULD AU IT LIKE IN A BAKERY OR SOMETHING IF YOU WANTED TO AVOID GORE, AND JUST MAKE THEM VIOLENTLY ...BAKE STUFF? IDK, MAYBE THE JOKER MAKES EVIL PASTRIES THAT HAVE TO FIGHT BATMAN'S DO-GOODING ONES OR SOMETHING. IT COULD BE DELICIOUS.

See, my problem is that I firmly believe that The Joker's scars were self-inflicted and that he's so crazy that if he doesn't have someone else to target he'll go for himself, and I'd end up having some self-mutilation and kinky "WATCH ME, BATMAN, OLD PAL! :D" stuff involved with it. Which is a little too strange even for me.
