luchiaI've been spending an embarassing amount of the day contemplating why I ship things. Well, not ship things, but what exactly makes me all "ZOMG OTP!!!" with a couple.
Naturally, this led me on a 'BACK IN THE DAY' journey. Here is the extended rambling:
Sailor Moon
I was all about the standard Usagi(Serena)/Mamoru(Darian or whatever). But when we met the glory that is Hotaru and the other Outers, we got Sailor Saturn. I now know that ONE SCENE turned me into a ravenous Saturn/Moon shipper. I should note that it's not Hotaru in any way - during the end of S, if you remember, Sailor Saturn is more or less posessing Hotaru's body, just like Mistress 9 did. The girl is practically a puppet thanks to them. Saturn remembers everything about the past, Saturn is fully prepared to destroy the world and remake the world at the same time at the cost of her own life, and in a very Usagi way, Sailor Moon obviously tries to stop her. At this point, Saturn literally swings down her glaive and is fully prepared to kill her, and even says so. Sailor Moon starts crying, of course, being all weak and powerless as Saturn goes and jumps into battle after breaking her power apart, and gets all her powers back with all that shoujo LOVE! stuff, and they both go save the world.
Saturn is the only Sailor that can beat Sailor Moon's godmoding. Equality is a huuuge deal for me when it comes to my OTPs, and let's face it - that's as close to beating Sailor Moon as you can get. Also, throughout the series before that scene, they'd been doing everything they could to keep Hotaru from waking up Saturn because they knew that Saturn was not your average Sailor Soldier. Where Usagi is young and optimistic and pure, Saturn is so disillusioned that she has no problem with destroying the world. By definition, Saturn should be considered not only an enemy, but EVIL, and yet Usagi goes further in that ONE SCENE than in any other to try and save someone. She dies for Mamoru, but she lives to save Saturn.
I think that's about as logical as I can make that sound, so let us continue on to...
Gundam Wing
I write 1x2 (Heero/Duo). My OTP? Treize Khushrenada/Chang Wufei. I will swear up and down until the day I die that this is one of my truest OTPs. They understand each other, Wufei cries when Treize dies, and they're both widowers. This is also the only visible age gap OTP that I have. THAT is how much I love these two. Visible age gaps are just about the only thing that makes me go :/ about a couple, but I think Wufei's got a very old soul, as corny as that sounds. They balance each other out - Wufei makes Treize less of an arrogant prick (CANON!), and Treize makes Wufei less of...um. An arrogant prick.
See? Even their bastardry is similar, and they are in love and need to have a happy ending and raise Marimaia together and teach her dangerous things about swords at a very young age.
Naruto
Yeeeeeeeees, the most obvious OTP ever. Naruto/Sasuke. I think I'll just link some pictures of these two for you to understand why. First meeting! After they fight! And then the video of when they meet again, because you need to see the tears and the UST-at-13-years-old flashback and the FLOATING HUG and the multiple "SASUKEEEEEEE!"s and "Naruto"s. (It gets plotty around 6:00, so you can stop if'n you want.)
Anyway, they're mostly canon already. One manga cover seriously looks like a romance novel. I think even Kishimoto ships it.

Air Gear
Be prepared to be amazed, for my OTP does not involve Ringo (aka the chick in my icons). Really, my OTP is an OT3, and that is the FLAMING TRIO~!
To explain, there are specific 'roads' people run on their rocket-powered rollerblades. One of these focuses on speed and friction. This is called the Flame Road, and everyone who runs it is gay. It's awesome. We only have ONE officially gay member of The Flaming Trio, but...yeah. They're very very gay together.
First, we have the Flame King, Spitfire. He is a hairstylist. And no, he's not the confirmed gay one. That would be Sano, who is a gazillionaire and literally dropped his pants and tried to drug the main character to rape him! And the third is dear Kazu, the main character'slackey BEST FRIEND who is shy and oblivious and happy to be unnoticeable, and yet the other two hook onto him VERY fast, for Kazu is very very good at running their magical gay Flame Road and can apparently master anything after seeing it ONCE.
I would tell you more about their OT3ness, but it's so spoilery that I'll just say this: there is a heartbreaking scene where people die protecting other people and...yeah. A chick gets impailed by a helicopter blade, too, but that's not related to the OT3.
Strangely enough, I also have a Agito/Kazu OTP. What can I say, the guy's popular with the boys.
Bleach
Again, my OTP is already mostly canon. This OTP is Yumichika/Ikkaku. They call themselves partners, Ikkaku is the only person Yumichika will let see him when he KNOWS he's not looking his best, and...well, first I think I need to explain that they're in the 11th Division. That means they love to fight. And I mean love to fight. There's at least one panel where Yumichika literally licks his lips in excitement at getting to fight, and Ikkaku does a happydance when he thinks he's got a good fight ahead of him. No, I am not kidding. And yet, Yumichika is caring enough to let Ikkaku get the really good fights and just enjoy the show, and is also so worried about being made fun of for hisshikai MAGICAL POWERS not being physical-combat-based, he's willing to die (again) to avpid even the thought of Ikkaku's opinion of him from lessening. As seen and explained much better here.
There is a flashback wherein Ikkaku is wearing no pants and sitting on Yumichika's bed. There are these absolutely heartbreaking pages. They have to drug him to keep him from trying to save the man. If that ain't love, I don't know what is.
Also, they've lived together for at least 100 years.
I also ship Urahara Topping Anyone He Damn Well Wants To and a very messed up version of Ichigo/Ishida, but we're doing OTPs.
Saiyuki
HAKKAI/GOJYO. TENPOU/KENREN. KUBOTA/TOKITOH. I am NOT JOKING when I say they are so OTP that they are always reincarnated with each other. It's actually canon in Wild Adapter (Kubota/Tokitoh), and the mangaka has more or less admitted they're canon in every...well, canon. She's even drawn doujinshi of them, I'm fairly certain. They are just...yeah. This is so OTP that I feel almost like if you don't know it you aren't looking at the same thing I am.
I also ship Nii/EVERYONE, because I'm a twisted little thing.
Tin Man
OBVIOUS. MOOOVING ONNNN.
No, just kidding. Glimbrose and Cain, because they're both horribly traumatized, get along swell, can manage to make each other laugh and smile even though they're more traumatized than a dead patient on ER. THEY COMPLETE EACH OTHER or somesuch. I ship 'em. They're my OTP. Moving on.
Hellsing
Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing/Alucard. This very well may be my OTP of OTPs, since only Yumichika and Ikkaku rival my belief that no, there's no other pairing for them, they don't get to have sex with anyone but each other unless it's a threesome or a previously-OK'd affair, end of story. There will be multiple spoilers after this sentence and you probably don't care about Hellsing anyway, so feel free to move along. SPOILERS NOW, Alucard always has been and always will be, canonically, her monster. He drives Integra and gives her the strength to kill for the very first time, and she literally gives him the restraint he needs to keep himself from killing and eating just about the entirety of London (which he eventually kind of does anyway. Oh well, good try, you just can't hold Dracula down when you go batshit and want to destroy the Roman Catholic Church while there's Nazi vampire-zombies dropping from giant zeppelins the sky). And yes, she's staying a virgin for VERY good reasons, but I think that's the only way I can absolutely adore this pairing like I do.
These two are not going to hold hands and prance through flowers staring lovingly into each other's eyes. They are not going to get married and have children and live long, peaceful lives. They are going to continue to be violent, ruthless, and close to literally immoral. Alucard will continue to be a monster. Integra will ALWAYS be his master, even if by some miracle Alucard managed to turn her without having her revolver shoved into his throat and brains blasted out. They aren't healthy for each other, and as strange as this may sound, that is why they need each other. Alucard's already tried people who are healthy for him, and I think Integra would be bored out of her mind and freaked out if she was getting courted.
Again, practically canon. You need to read Hellsing to really understand the above two paragraphs. The manga is not something that could ever end in a happily ever after. It doesn't end in a happily ever after. Their universe is dark, bloody, and lethal. I'd expect my OTP to be nothing less.
Doctor Who
Season 1, I was shipping Rosedemption pretty hard.
Season 2, I was frowning and still doing it.
Season 3? Ohhhhhhh, season three. Season three introduced The Master, and therefore Harold Saxon, and Lucy Saxon, and the fucked up love that is their blissful insane marriage. Lucy is the best puppet ever, and the Master is the most caring puppet master ever. I really do think he loved her at least a little (or a lot; see: Viola!verse). This is the one OTP I really can't put a finger on about why I love it. It might be the doting and mild badassery and adorable insanity of them both.
And then there's, you know, Master/Doctor, which is amazing too. There's essays and essays on this, so I'll just say, yep. I ship it. So does Donna. Yeah, that's right - you don't ship Donna; she's too busy slashing you.
