Homigod you guys, not only did I learn about every "Chinese" (PEOPLE OF THE HAAAAN) dynasty, I also learned FOUR (4) Han-system characters (human, big/great, heaven/ly, imperial capital) and more about the emperor's role in Japan than...I don't know. Insert a comparison.
SO! Let us begin with THE PEOPLE OF THE HAN. They call themselves that because China comes from the Ch'in (Qin) dynasty (although dynasties were actually more like countries and their collapses caused almost immediate anarchy) and the Ch'in united the territories, sure, but they were kind of bastards. The HAN dynasty, on the other hand, was apparently four hundred years of idealistic bliss and peace, and therefore they like the Han better than the Ch'in. They're still China, though. They just don't like being called Chinese apparently?
And then, we learned about Japaaaaaaannnnn. At first they modeled themselves after the Tang dynasty (which can be sort of compared to Rome re: cultural/technological/artistic/etc. advancement) with a direct Emperor who was supposedly the grandson of the grandson of the Sun Goddess, but about 100 years later SOMETHING HAPPENED (we haven't learned that yet D:) to make the Emperor give up direct control and rule kind of by proxy, particularly through the shogun, oooo. What's REALLY neat is that the Japanese Emperors are one line. There's no family save the first Emperor'sand Mohammed is his prophet. There were pleeenty of changes via shogun (we americans say "shogunate" for the government, but apparently That Is Bad?), but not in the official monarchy! NEAT, HUH?! :D :D :D
Mmmm, college. ♥ Anyway, I doubt anyone wants a SPANISH recap, so this is probably all you get for today. I need to go run around, so I'll probably be back after class! :D
Are you happy, Bobsie?

Date: 2009-01-05 10:39 pm (UTC)Oh, China. Oh, Eastern Studies. I wish you were offered in more than one class, and that class didn't conflict with my majors' requirements.
